Cookie guidelines
A cookie is a small data record that is saved on your end device and contains data such as personal page settings and login information, for example. These data records are produced and sent to you by the web server which you connected to using your web browser.
Cookies can essentially be divided into three categories.
1. Required cookies are indispensable for the correct functioning of the website. Functional cookies have to be processed to allow you to visit the web page (see Article 6 (1) (b) GDPR).
2. Information about your website usage is collected by cookies for analytics and personalisation (for example page views, length of stay per page, clicks) and, if you choose to participate, enables us to include your survey results in website optimisation. In this way, they help us tailor your user experience to your personal needs.
3. Marketing cookies: We use these cookies and other technologies to display advertising tailored to your interests, both inside and outside the Volkswagen websites. These cookies and other technologies collect information about how you use our website, such as which pages you visit most or how you move around the site. The purpose of these cookies and other technologies is to provide you with content that is more relevant to you and tailored to your interests. They are also used to limit how often an ad is shown and to measure and control the effectiveness of campaigns. They register whether you have visited a website or not and which content has been used. This is based on a unique identification of your browser and your Internet device. The information can be shared with other websites or third-party pages, such as Volkswagen Group companies or advertisers, so that relevant advertising can also be displayed on other websites. In addition to cookies, other technologies such as server-side application programming interfaces (APIs) are also used to transmit the aforementioned information to third parties. We use the services of a third party to process such data for marketing purposes. These cookies are often linked to page functions offered by third parties, insofar as this is expedient.
We only use cookies for analytics, personalisation and marketing if you have given us your consent to do so. Consent is provided via the cookie banner, which has to be actively clicked to give consent. For more information about cookies and how to revoke your consent, please refer to the Privacy Policy.
Various types of cookies are used within the categories described. An explanation of the most frequently used types of cookies is provided in the following for your reference:
1. Session cookies
While you are active on a web page, a session cookie is temporarily stored in your computer’s memory. This contains a session ID so, for example, you do not have to log in again for each page you access. Session cookies are deleted when you log off, or cease to be valid as soon as your session has automatically expired.
2. Persistent or stored cookies
Persistent or stored cookies save a file on your computer until the scheduled expiration date. These cookies enable web pages to remember your information and settings the next time you visit. This makes it easier and quicker to access the web pages; for example, there is no need to re-adjust the language settings for our portal each time you visit. When the expiry date elapses, the cookies are automatically deleted when you visit the web page that created them.
3. Third-party cookies
Third-party cookies come from providers other than the operator of the web page. They may be used for example to collect information for advertising or generate custom content and web statistics.
4. Flash cookies
Flash cookies are stored on your computer as data elements of websites that use Adobe Flash Player. Flash cookies are not time-limited.
